Inverness to Drymen
Map 8 and Route
Map 8 – Grandtully to Auchnafree (Glen Almond)
About a mile outside Aberfeldy the path joins the A827. Follow this road into the town passing Aberfeldy Distillery on your left. In the centre of Aberfeldy you will cross the Moness Burn just after this take a left at the cross roads following the A826 for about ¼ of a mile until your reach ‘The Birks’ named by Robert Burns in one of his poems. (Do not cross the road bridge) Here you will come across another Rob Roy Way direction sign; walk past this and follow the steep path on the west side of the burn up to the Falls of Moness. Worth a moment here, the falls are quite magnificent. Just past the falls, the path doubles back on itself and exits the woods onto a road. (Do not take the path straight on here or you will end up in thick woods). At the road turn left and follow it up to Urlar Farm. The Rob Roy Way actually continues through the farm, however just before the road enters the farm you will be directed to follow a path to your left. This bypasses the farm, but brings you out on the south side of the Urlar Burn. You must cross this burn back onto north side where the track exits west of the farm. (Do not follow the track to your left up to Meall Mor) Follow this track across the moor until you reach a small lochan where the views north across the Tay Forest park are spectacular. Here you will exit the moor onto a single track road. Turn left here and follow the road for 2 ½ miles down into Glen Quaich. Keep an eye out for the Red Kites as you descend into the valley; a magnificent site. Just before the road crosses the River Quaich near Garrow, take the farm track to your left and follow this until it joins the road again at Auchnacloich Farm. Take a left here and again follow the road for about 2 miles past Loch Freuchie. About half way down the loch the road passes a small tree plantation on the right and a further ¼ mile down the road opposite a farm there is a track up into Glen Lochan. You are now on the Rob Roy Way once more, but there is no way marker to indicate this. The track takes up to a small lochan, Lochan a Mhuilinn; here the track changes into a path. It is very boggy through this section and the path becomes ill-defined. As the hills on either side steepen into a gorge-like valley, keep to the left of the burn. You will pass two very small lochans on your descent. When you pass the second of these cross the burn and make your way down to Glenshervie Burn where you will meet a track that takes you over the burn and down into Auchnafree Farm/Lodge and Glen Almond. Many gun dogs barking and tame ducks quacking here! Follow the track to the west along the banks of the River Almond.
